Klimafreundliches Bauen mit Bambus
Im Rahmen der Seminarreihe „Klimafreundliches Bauen“ im Studiengang Architektur der Hochschule RheinMain (HSRM) fand im März 2025 erneut eine studentische Exkursion nach Ghana statt. Neben dem intensiven interkulturellen Austausch war das Hauptziel der Reise ein zweiwöchiger interdisziplinärer Praxisworkshop zum nachhaltigen Bauen mit nachwachsenden Rohstoffen. Auf dem Projektgelände der deutschen NGO GROW Colourful Ghana e. V. unterstützt die HSRM seit zwei Jahren die Planung und Umsetzung eines Bambus-Trainingszentrums. In mehreren Bauabschnitten entstehen hier verschiedene Gebäudetypen und Funktionsbereiche wie Gästehäuser, Werkstätten, Schulungs- und Infrastrukturgebäude, die der Entwicklung einer nachhaltigen Landwirtschaft und der Ausbildung lokaler Bauhandwerker dienen sollen.
As part of the seminar series “Climate-friendly building” in the Architecture course at the Hochschule RheinMain (HSRM), a student excursion to Ghana took place once again in March 2025. In addition to the intensive intercultural exchange, the main aim of the trip was a two-week interdisciplinary hands-on workshop on sustainable construction with renewable building materials. On the project site of the German NGO GROW Colourful Ghana e. V., the HSRM has been supporting the planning and implementation of a bamboo training center for two years. Various types of buildings and functional areas such as guest houses, workshops, training and infrastructure buildings are being built here in several construction phases, which will serve to develop sustainable agriculture and train local building trades.

Neben dem kulturellen Austausch stand die praktische Anwendung im Fokus: Bambusverbindungen wurden von Hand gefertigt, die Unterkonstruktion der Lehmwände gewebt, diese mit Lehm ausgemauert, Dachkonstruktionen errichtet und erste Wände verputzt. Nach zehn arbeitsintensiven Tagen stand schließlich die Tragstruktur des ersten Moduls sowie die begrenzenden Wandelemente. Auf diesem Ergebnis aufbauend können nun die lokalen Beteiligten in der nächsten Zeit die weiteren Arbeiten fertigstellen und die nächsten Module anschließen.
In addition to the cultural exchange, the focus was on practical application: bamboo connections were made by hand, bricked with clay, roof structures erected and the first walls plastered. After ten labor-intensive days, the supporting structure of the first module and the boundary wall elements were finally completed. Building on this result, the local participants can now complete the remaining work in the coming days and weeks and connect the next modules.

Bamboo construction kit system
Erste Infrastruktureinrichtungen des Bambusschulungszentrums wurden bereits im Jahr 2023 von den lokalen Organisationen und dem Fachbereich Architektur und Bauingenieurwesen der HSRM errichtet. Diesmal war das Ziel, beim Bau einer hexagonalen Hütte, entwickelt von Jonathan Neulen zu unterstützen, welche vorwiegend aus Bambus und Lehm errichtet wird. Das Gebäude wird dem Schulungszentrum später als Pförtnerhäuschen und Büro dienen. Dabei ist die Konstruktion auf eine modulare Bauweise ausgerichtet, sodass das Gebäude bei Bedarf beliebig erweiterbar ist. Gleichzeitig ist es ein erster Prototyp im Forschungsprojekt des klimaresilienten Bambusbaukastensystems für die Subsahararegion.
The first infrastructure facilities of the bamboo training center were already built in 2023 by the local organizations and the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering of the HSRM. This time, the aim was to support the construction of a hexagonal hut, developed by Jonathan Neulen, which is mainly made of bamboo and clay. The building will later serve as a gatehouse and office for the training center. The design is based on a modular construction method so that the building can be extended as required. It is also the first prototype in the research project for the climate-resilient bamboo modular system for the sub-Saharan region.

experience
Im Frühjahr hatte ich die Gelegenheit, an einem nachhaltigen Bauprojekt in Ghana mitzuwirken, bei dem mit traditionellen Materialien wie Lehm und Bambus gearbeitet wurde. Gemeinsam mit einem internationalen Team und lokalen Handwerkern gestalteten wir ein Bauwerk in Handarbeit.
Die Arbeit vor Ort verlangte viel Flexibilität, Kreativität und Teamgeist. Rückschläge durch Wetter, Materialmangel oder Missverständnisse gehörten zum Alltag und halfen mir, lösungsorientiert zu denken und mich auch unter ungewohnten Bedingungen schnell anzupassen. Besonders prägend war der kulturelle Austausch: Durch die enge Zusammenarbeit mit Menschen vor Ort lernte ich, andere Arbeitsrhythmen, Werte und Denkweisen nicht nur zu respektieren, sondern als Bereicherung zu sehen.
Das Projekt hat meine Fähigkeiten in interkultureller Kommunikation, Improvisation und gemeinschaftlicher Projektarbeit nachhaltig gestärkt und mir gezeigt, wie viel persönliches Wachstum außerhalb der eigenen Komfortzone möglich ist.
In spring, I had the opportunity to work on a sustainable construction project in Ghana using traditional materials such as clay and bamboo. Together with an international team and local craftsmen, we designed a building by hand.
The work on site demanded a great deal of flexibility, creativity and team spirit. Setbacks due to weather, lack of materials or misunderstandings were part of everyday life and helped me to think in a solution-oriented way and adapt quickly even under unfamiliar conditions. The cultural exchange was particularly formative: by working closely with local people, I learned not only to respect other working rhythms, values and ways of thinking, but also to see them as an enrichment.
The project strengthened my skills in intercultural communication, improvisation and collaborative project work in the long term and showed me how much personal growth is possible outside my own comfort zone.
